Dave Meltzer Latest 5-Star Match Revealed

Dave Meltzer Latest 5-Star Match Revealed Wrestling Observer

Dave Meltzer announced the latest match to receive his much-discussed “five-star” rating in the current Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

The match took place at TAKATaichiMania, the 50th anniversary show that celebrated Michinoku’s debut 30 years ago and Taichi’s debut 20 years ago.

Meltzer commented that the main event, which saw Shingo Takagi take on Taichi for the KOPW title, was “perhaps the best singles match” of Taichi’s career.

On the specifics of the match itself, Meltzer broke it down saying:

“Shingo Takagi beat Taichi to retain the KOPW title in a last-man-standing lumberjack match in 29:39.

“Takagi won the first fall in 3:36 with a cradle.

“Taichi took the second fall in 8:19 with the Gedo clutch.

“Taichi kept it on which meant Takagi was cradled and couldn’t get up.

“It was cool in that it worked, but the idea of holding someone on the ground in a cradle to keep them from beating the ten count goes against the concept of the match.

“Takagi escaped at six.

“They traded big moves like Saito suplexes.

“Both did hard lariats and wouldn’t go down.

“Takagi hit Made in Japan but Taichi kicked out.

“He did Made in Japan again and got the third fall win in 13:00.

“They traded hard elbows.

“Taichi won the fourth fall in 17:16 with a last ride power bomb.

“Takagi undid turnbuckle padding and threw Takagi’s back and throat into the exposed metal.

“Takagi did a Death Valley bomb off the middle rope.

“Taichi then hit Black Mephisto on Takagi and both collapsed and they pinned each other at the same time at 21:28.

“Both got up before ten.

“Taichi had a bloody nose.

“Taichi used a sumo throw and a great dropkick.

“Taichi won the sixth fall in 26:06 with a superkick.

“Takagi just barely beat the ten count.

“Takagi came back with a cross-arm power bomb.

“Taichi went for a high kick but Takagi gave him a lariat to the ankle.

“Takagi threw Taichi into the exposed metal, used a lariat that send Taichi into the exposed metal, pumping bomber and last of the dragon to win the seventh fall in 29:07.

“The whole crowd was chanting for Taichi to get up at ten and he used the ropes to almost get up, but then collapsed.
