While Brock Lesnar vs. Reigns has already been confirmed by WWE for SummerSlam, more details are emerging regarding his return.
As reported by Fightful Select (paid subscription required) the plan for Lesnar’s return has been in the works for “about three weeks,” meaning that it was certainly well in advance of the public release of the Wall Street Journal article but also after the investigation into allegations against Vince McMahon began by the WWE Board of Directors.
While tonight’s face-off set up the program for WWE Summerslam, Randy Orton was originally slated as the main event challenger to Reigns’ Undisputed WWE Championship.
Apparently though when it became clear Orton would experience an extended absence, the focus shifted to Lesnar’s return.
While Lesnar was rumored to be backstage shortly before the show, his appearance was not listed on any of the internal run sheets that are chronically leaked as is typical for major surprise returns.
