Following speculation about the future of WWE, Disney has reportedly acquired streaming rights for WWE Network content in a new territory.
Per Deadline, WWE and Disney have agreed on a deal for the WWE Network to stream exclusively on Disney+ Hotstar in Indonesia. WWE premium live events will also air on the service as part of the standard subscription. Disney+ Hotstar will feature WWE programming in English and Bahasa Indonesia, the country’s official language.
The deal is similar to WWE’s exclusive US streaming rights agreement with NBCUniversal’s Peacock.
Discussing the new deal, Vineet Puri (General Manager, Indonesia, The Walt Disney Company) issued the following statement:
“As home of the best global and local language content, we’re excited to welcome the extensive library of content from WWE Network to the ever expanding slate of Disney+ Hotstar. With this new content on Disney+ Hotstar, we hope to expand our reach and engage even more audiences in Indonesia.”
In recent years, fans have speculated that Disney will soon acquire exclusive streaming rights in notable international territories. This new deal could potentially be a prelude to exclusivity deals in other regions.
WWE President Nick Khan recently stated that the company isn’t actively looking to sell. More at this link.
