Don Callis Returning To NJPW Commentary

Don Callis Returning To NJPW Commentary

Aside from being an executive vice president of Impact Wrestling, and host of the Killing the Town podcast, Don Callis is also one of the finest colour commentators in the business.

It was partly on the strength of his commentary alongside Kevin Kelly in New Japan Pro Wrestling that helped elevate him to his lofty position after years away from the industry. His knowledge of wrestling was undeniable whenever he put on a headset.

It was because he was focusing on Impact Wrestling that Callis was absent from NJPW’s English broadcast team recently. But, as New Japan’s Twitter account reveals, Callis shall return.

Realising the market for Japanese puroresu in English speaking countries is growing, NJPW recently added English commentary to many of the classic matches in its library.

The commentary of Kelly and Callis over historic matches like Okada-Omega II was a contributing factor to the success of New Japan World. When Dave Meltzer started rolling out the 6 star+ matches, it was the voice of Callis who often narrated the bouts.

Although talents like Rocky Romero and others have stepped in and replaced Callis recently, and there was even talk of Lanny Poffo being offered the role, no one could ever truly replace him.

As seen above, the dynamic between Don Callis and IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kenny Omega has changed somewhat, which is one of the many things that we can look forward to when Callis returns to Japan.

He is, by any standard, doing some of the best work of his career.

We can expect to see Callis at his old post for Wrestle Kingdom 13 where Omega is slated to defend the IWGP World Heavyweight Title against G1 Climax winner Hiroshi Tanahashi.
