WWE Champion Drew McIntyre has commented on scrapped plans for a match at WrestleMania against the Undertaker 10 years ago.
McIntyre was originally earmarked to face Taker at WrestleMania 26 but ended up in the Money in the Bank ladder match instead. He was then supposed to win that initially, but it went to Jack Swagger.
Speaking on Steve Austin’s Broken Skull Sessions on the WWE Network about the scrapped Taker match, McIntyre said:
“I certainly wasn’t ready for that opportunity at that time. But it was right after Mania that things started going downhill personally. This is the time my mother got sick for the first time back home in Scotland and she got a cancer diagnosis. It rocked my world as she was the most important person to me. I started acting out and drinking basically every night.
“Things started going downhill professionally as well as personally and it was just a vicious spiral that kept going and going and going every night. I was out and about taking my mind off things and it was directly affecting my work. My personal life was not good.”
Drew McIntyre retained his WWE Title over AJ Styles and The Miz in a TLC match this past Sunday. His challenger for the Royal Rumble isn’t clear yet but it would seem to be Styles, Sheamus or Braun Strowman if he returns.
