Last night on NXT, it was announced that the ‘Great American Bash’ will take place as a two-night show, replacing the July 1 and July 8 episodes of NXT.
This is obviously an attempt to counter-program AEW, with Tony Khan’s promotion putting on Fyter Fest over those two dates, something that has been announced for weeks now.
The original idea of the ‘Great American Bash’ was created by Dusty Rhodes, and Cody’s father was heavily featured in the promotional announcement video for the upcoming event.
As such, Dusty’s daughter, Teil Margaret Runnels, has taken to Twitter to call for WWE/NXT to cut her mother “a check” for their use of Dusty’s creation.

‘Great American Bash’ shows originated in NWA in 1985, with the first show being main evented by Tully Blanchard and the aforementioned Dusty Rhodes in a Steel Cage match for the NWA World Television Championship.
After WWE acquired WCW, the company started putting on “Great American Bash” shows in 2005, with the final show being a special episode of SmackDown in 2012. This is the first “Great American Bash” show since Dusty’s passing.
It is important to note that while Dusty may have come up with the idea of the “Great American Bash”, WWE now owns the trademark so is free to use it however they see fit.
