Earl Hebner Believes The Montreal Screwjob Was A Work

Earl Hebner is perhaps best known for being the referee for the Montreal Screwjob. He has had many career highlights but that is probably the most well-known.

Now, after 23 years, Hebner has revealed he thinks the whole thing was a work. He made this revelation on VOC Nation’s In The Room podcast. Here is the full quote, courtesy of Wrestling Inc.:

“At that time, I really didn’t think it was a work; today, I think it was. Somebody had to be the gopher, somebody had to ring the bell, and to make it look official, it was me … if you look back at the tapes, Vince (McMahon) and Sgt. Slaughter was at that ring. Regardless of whether I rang that bell or not after the sharpshooter, somebody was gonna ring it to make it official.”

It is bizarre that the referee, who was one of the people closest to the story, now believes it was all a work. The accounts of all of those involved and those who have direct knowledge of the situation have said that the events that saw Bret Hart get screwed by Vince McMahon and Shawn Michaels at Survivor Series 1997 were that it was a shoot. It seems Earl Hebner remains a skeptic.
