In a new article from SI, intriguing behind the scenes details have been revealed regarding the race between two Khans to open the forbidden door with Tony Khan working to establish a relationship with NJPW and Nick Khan attempting to obtain a partnership with NJPW in order to entice free-agent Bryan Danielson to remain with WWE.

Apparently, AEW and NJPW had been discussing a working partnership way back during the pandemic however the Forbidden Door pay per view is able to more logistically occur now that travel restrictions between the US and Japan have loosened.
