Rey Mysterio is someone who has captivated fans with his incredible flashy luchador style of wrestling, paving the way for future performers of a similar style. One such up-and-comer is none other than IMPACT Wrestling’s Fenix, who recently was interviewed by Viceland.
Fenix was asked why he wears a mask, and he responded with:
“You know, Mysterio is one of my favorite luchadors. And of course I want to be like him. So, of course the first thing I take from him is the mask. The first time I put on my mask, it’s incredible. [It’s] almost like an explosion in your chest, and you feel like a superhero. That’s how the people look at you, like a superhero.”
Fenix also mentioned the importance of the mask and what it signifies to luchadors:
“For luchadors, it’s very important, because in Aztec culture, the Mexican culture, the warriors, the real warriors covered [their] faces to do war. So when lucha libre started in Mexico, people started to cover their face. So you specially design your mask, and when you make this [mask], you take a lot of pride in your mask.”
The tandem of brothers Pentagon Jr. and Fenix are prominently featured in Lucha Underground, IMPACT Wrestling, MLW, CMLL and a multitude of other promotions. For a while, rumors circulated that Fenix and Pentagon might sign with WWE after their current contracts expired. However, those rumors were dispelled. For now, it seems that Fenix will continue to wow crowds across the globe and hopefully earn the respect of his hero.
