The finish to the main event of WrestleMania 35 was supposed to be one of the best moments in WWE history, with “The Man” Becky Lynch standing at the top of the ramp as both the Raw and Smackdown Women’s Champion. However, a seemingly fluke pin by Lynch had the fans confused about whether the finish was planned or a botch.
Dave Meltzer noted in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Ronda was supposed to get pinned, but was supposed to be pinned clean without getting her shoulder up off the mat in a ‘flukey’ manner. There were rumours that Charlotte was supposed to be tapped out by Lynch to finish the match, but Meltzer rebuffed that.
Meltzer also noted that there were backstage discussions about how Rousey would lose. Some said she should tap out and others said she should be pinned. Meltzer speculated Vince McMahon made the call to have her pinned as to protect her in defeat somewhat.
Meltzer also acknowledged the rumours that Ronda Rousey was angry backstage at the botched finished, and he said that this was not the case. He added that it was strange for WWE’s production team to show this on replays and their commentary team to acknowledge it on the broadcast. He said that fans should not think that this is leading to a rematch, because Rousey, although advertised to appear tonight Raw, is expected to be taking time off from WWE after her loss.
