Former Champion Wins First WWE Singles Match Since 2017 WWE

A former champion won their first WWE singles match since 2017 following last week’s SmackDown (December 6).

This past week’s Friday Night SmackDown emendated from the Target Center in Minneapolis, MN, with the show seeing plenty of build towards Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 14 as well as a surprise WWE Tag Team Title change.

While DIY celebrated becoming two-time WWE Tag Team Champions, knocking off the Motor City Machine Guns whilst turning heel in the process, one notable tag team star returned to competition in a dark match after cameras stopped rolling.

Former Raw Tag Team Champion Luke Gallows made his return to action in a dark match on SmackDown, his first in-ring appearance since tag team partner Karl Anderson fell to injury in October.

Gallows faced off with Austin Theory in the match with The OC member even picking up the win against the former United States Champion.

The win is notable for being Gallows’ first singles match victory in WWE since defeating Enzo Amore on the May 1, 2017 episode of Raw, as well as being his first one-on-one bout in the company since losing to Aleister Black on Raw in March 2020.

It’s worth noting that Gallows and Anderson spent over two years away from WWE following their Spring 2020 release.

It’s unclear whether WWE has plans to use Gallows on TV in Anderson’s absence, with Anderson set to miss six to nine months following rotator cuff surgery.
