Former US Champion Says He Wasn’t Offered Deal To Return To WWE

One of the people who was fired by WWE in April as part of a cost-cutting measure brought on by the Coronavirus was former Raw Tag Team and United States Champion, Zack Ryder.

Ryder (now Matt Cardona) has since gone on to debut for AEW. In this first and only match for the promotion, he tagged with Cody to take on Alex Reynolds and John Silver of The Dark Order.

It was reported shortly after the aforementioned mass firings several months ago that WWE had actually contacted some of the released talent in an attempt to bring them back to the company.

In an interview with Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select (subscription required and recommended), Cardona has since revealed that he wasn’t one of the people who was offered the chance to return to WWE:

Cardona specified to me that although there are rumors that WWE has made offers to bring talent back, he’s never had any conversations to that degree with WWE since the release, only saying that he’s pretty sure everyone got the “maybe we’ll bring you back” talk.

Interestingly, Cardona noted during the same interview that he was offered a five-year deal from WWE in early-2019. However, he wasn’t sure if he wanted to spend several more years working for the company:

Even though he’d been with WWE for ten years, Cardona told me that he was relieved whenever he got his WWE release. He’d actually been offered a new WWE deal around WrestleMania 2019 time, but wasn’t sure if he wanted to spend another five years in WWE.

It was announced this week on Dynamite that Matt Cardona will team up with Scorpio Sky, Dustin Rhodes and QT Marshall to take on four members of The Dark Order next week at All Out.
