Former WWE Champion Opens Up On Current ‘Gatekeeper’ Role WWE

A former WWE Champion has opened up on his current ‘gatekeeper’ role in the company after re-signing last year.

Sheamus has been on the WWE main roster for over 15 years, with him capturing four World Championships during his career, and capturing almost every accolade available.

Sheamus re-signed with WWE on a five year deal last year, with him now serving as a veteran to upcoming stars on the roster, including his recent rivalries with Bron Breakker and Ludwig Kaiser.

Speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Sheamus opened up on his role as a ‘gatekeeper’ in the company, and how he felt undermined in the first part of his career.

He said:

“I have a point to prove. For the first part of my career, I thought I was undermined a lot and people didn’t really…for example, if I was in a match with someone and I brought the best out of them, people were talking about, ‘This guy carried Sheamus to a great match’ or it would ‘this guy is great.’ It only took ten years for people to realize, ‘there’s a common denominator. Sheamus is in all of them.’

“I love the fact that I’m in a gatekeeper role with a lot of new talent coming in and help getting their confidence up and getting to show the world who they are. There are a lot of talent that wouldn’t do that, but I love it. I love them stepping up to me. Everyone knows about Gunther and what we did at Clash at the Castle. Fans who weren’t NXT fans, that put him on the map. We’ve had barnburners since then. That was probably one of the best moments of my career, the standing ovation after. You talk about winning titles, 18 seconds at Mania, to me, that was one of the most memorable moments of my entire life, getting a standing ovation in Cardiff, Wales.

“Going in there with Priest. The stuff with Ludwig. People are seeing what an aggressive bastard he is and how good he is. Breakker as well. Bronson Reed. All these lads, going in there and getting the best out of them. It’s great to see. I’m proud of all of them. I see them doing really well. I’m so happy for them. There’s a little pride for me seeing how well they are doing. Especially Bronson. We were in there and he was too nice, now he’s in there as a killer. We had those two matches where we beat the bollocks out of each other and I was fighting underneath the whole time. He is a monster. He may not be seven foot tall, but the lad is close to 400 pounds and he’s so athletic.”

Sheamus and Ludwig Kaiser are set to face off on tomorrow night’s WWE Raw show.
