Former WWE Faction To Return In John Cena Retirement Tour?

As John Cena approaches the end of his career, a former WWE star has pitched a return for a stable that feuded with and recruited him.

In 2010, the Nexus was formed, going on to feud with John Cena before he would briefly join their ranks and hold the WWE Tag Team Championship under their membership.

Cena wouldn’t fully embrace being part of The Nexus, finding himself at odds with leader Wade Barrett, and breaking away from the group very quickly.

It’s one match in particular that sees former WWE star David Otunga pitching revenge over John Cena before he retires.

The August 2010 WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view saw Team WWE (John Cena, John Morrison, R-Truth, Bret Hart, Edge, Chris Jericho & Daniel Bryan) take on The Nexus (Wade Barrett, David Otunga, Justin Gabriel, Heath Slater, Darren Young, Skip Sheffield, & Michael Tarver) in a 7-on-7 Elimination Tag Team Match.

Team WWE would win the match, with Barrett tapping out to Cena’s STF in the main event of the show.

Speaking on The F Y’all Podcast, Otunga cited the loss at SummerSlam in 2010 as a mitigating factor that affected the group’s potential success, saying:

“The SummerSlam thing, that was a disaster. We should have won that. That completely cut the legs out from under us. Everybody agreed (Nexus should have won) but one person. John Cena.”

Otunga would declare that The Nexus not reuniting to confront Cena before he retires would be a “travesty”, stating:

“And to be honest with you, I think it’s a travesty if he retires without The Nexus coming back to whoop his ass. I think that’s what should happen.

“He should be about to break the record, all of a sudden, who comes out of the crowd, who pops up on the ring – boom, it’s payback. Here’s your receipt, our receipt.”

John Cena has limited dates remaining on his WWE calendar, with his final match set to take place in December.

Of the Nexus members in that aforementioned SummerSlam match, only Wade Barrett currently works for WWE, serving as a commentator.
