Former WWE Star Says Goldberg ‘Took Care Of Him’ During Brutal Spear Spot WWE

A former WWE star has recalled being one the receiving end of one of Goldberg’s most memorable Spears, confirming that the spot looked worse than it actually was.

Of the many stars who have used the Spear as a finishing move, Goldberg’s was arguably the most devastating – with many different instances of the Hall of Famer delivering the move still discussed among fans to this day.

One of the Spears that has lived on in infamy is Goldberg laying out Nunzio during the 2004 Royal Rumble, with the Hall of Famer himself highlighting that as one of his best during an interview with Chris Van Vliet in 2024.

Speaking with Rewind Recap Relive, Nunzio admitted that he has watched the move back a “million times”, and while it did knock the wind out of him a “little bit”, it was pre-planned and perfectly safe, with Goldberg “taking care” of him during the spot.

Nunzio said:

“I got to admit, I watched it a million times too. I see clips pop up on my feed all the time.

“At the time you just got to know how to take it. Does it knock the wind out a little bit? Yes. But I tell you it looked a lot worse than it really was.

“He did take care of me. I got to do my part and he does his part and we hit at the right time, I left my feet at the right time. Something like that you don’t want your feet planted, you want to be as light as you could so when he hits you, you just take the fall back.

“It didn’t knock me out, it knocked the wind out of me a little bit, but you gotta remember I knew it was coming, it was discussed. I was more worried about when he was gonna press me and throw me to the floor.”

Goldberg competed inside a WWE ring for the last time at Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 12, losing to GUNTHER in a World Heavyweight Championship match.

Nunzio’s time as an active competitor in WWE came to an end in 2008, however, he did return to the company to challenge Tony D’Angelo for the NXT North American Championship on the November 6 episode of NXT at the ECW Arena in Philadelphia.
