Former WWE Star Opens Up On Not Representing Heritage In The Company WWE

A former WWE star has opened up on not being able to represent their Filipino heritage during their time in the company.

During her time in WWE, Kayden Carter spent most of her time in a tag team with Katana Chance, with the pair capturing the Women’s Tag Team Championship during their time on the main roster.

Kayden, now going again by the name Lacey Lane, was one of several Filipinos on the WWE roster, though she didn’t often get to represent her country on WWE television.

Speaking on the Wrestling-Wrestling Podcast, Lacey opened up on not being able to represent her heritage in the company.

She said:

“I looked at a lot of the meanings, I know Tala was one, there was a lot of names I was looking at that were Filipino that just didn’t, because they were on the list, if I ever go back I’ll show you the list, but it had a lot of Filipino first names and last names, but I didn’t really pick the first name, and the writer wanted the other one, so that’s why it didn’t come to what I wanted at the time.

“It was fine, the most I got was they always announced me from the Philippines, so I feel like, I try to fight for a lot of the things, because even if I wasn’t getting those big wins that I wanted, I was still getting little wins here and there.

“I even started shooting content to promote, when Shotzi got there and Joaquin (Wilde), I did a table for three trying Filipino food. I was trying to do a lot of things to keep going because I was really upset that they didn’t bring me to the Philippines, because I was in WWE at the time, when they came to the Philippines.

“People who had just got there say they were in Australia and got to go, and I was like, I don’t think they really understood my Filipino connection, and I don’t blame them, I understand how I look on the outside, so that’s not something people would automatically assume what I was, was Filipino, just because of how I look.

“I think we are all so proud, we talked about this, me, Joaquin and Shotzi are all so proud to be Fil-Ams whenever we know this about each other, and I don’t think that was something that was talked about enough, because look at Joaquin now he’s straight up Mexican. So for me, I want to be about culture, that’s why if you saw towards the end, when I’m really getting fed up, all my gear has the Filipino star on it.

“Some people recognise it, but the last one I had was very prominent, so I’ve been making sure to always incorporate it, but I also say this. When you’re in a tag team, it’s very difficult. My mom was like ‘get your Filipino star, make the colors’. I said mom, I am Filipino, Kacy is not. There is no way I can just be like ‘yo Kacy wear these colors and put on a Filipino patch here.

“There was some difficulties with it, but I always try and make it work, and always try to be vocal about it, and I was always very vocal, that’s all I had was to be vocal and make my own videos about it.

“I was so excited because I’m almost positive I was the first Filipina in WWE. So hopefully I can hold that title, because it means a lot and means I can pave the way for other people, so I love that fact that I was able to do it. I’m strong on representation, so if that is the case, I’m glad it gets to be me who represents it because I feel so strongly about it.”
