Former WWE Star Reveals How Many Times He Called Cody About Joining AEW

Jake Hager recently sat down with Inner Circle stablemate Chris Jericho for his Talk is Jericho podcast, to speak about a variety of topics including his time with WWE, departure from the company, and arrival in AEW.

During the interview, Hager (formerly known as Jack Swagger) opened up about calling Cody Rhodes, someone that he has previously worked with before in WWE, about the prospect of joining AEW:

“I had reached out to Cody. I think everybody in the world was reaching out to Cody at the time. We knew that we were on the same page; maybe it can work out. I reached out again and I’m still not getting anything. This is about May. This is Double or Nothing time and I’m not getting anything, and I think I told you that, and so, [Jericho] reached out. And he was like, ‘hey, check back in a couple weeks,’ and I don’t know what changed but then you came back an hour later. You’re like, ‘no man, this is it. They want to go with you.’”

Jake Hager would go on to debut for AEW in a big way on the debut episode of Dynamite. He joined Sammy Guevara, Santana, Ortiz and the aforementioned Chris Jericho in forming the Inner Circle on the first show.

During the interview, Jake Hager also opened up about how John Cena refused to drop the WWE Championship to him in 2010. He’d eventually beat Jericho for the World Heavyweight Championship.

Speaking of AEW signing former WWE stars, the promotion has announced the signing of another wrestler who previously worked for Vince McMahon‘s promotion. You can read more about that by clicking here.
