Former WWE Superstar Claims He Has Not Signed A Contract With AEW

After being released by the company earlier this year, former WWE and NXT superstar Tye Dillinger, now going by the name of Shawn Spears, appeared in the Casino Battle Royale last night on AEW’s Double or Nothing pre-show.

Spears recently said in interviews that he was “coming to AEW”, adding that he was “really looking forward to proving [himself]”. This coupled with the fact that Spears is a good friend of Cody Rhodes lead to many speculating that he had signed a full-time contract with the new promotion.

After last night’s show, Spears spoke to the media about a variety of topics, including fellow former WWE star Jon Moxley’s (Dean Ambrose) surprise appearance, and if he is a full-time member of the AEW roster.

When asked about Moxley’s debut, Spears had the following to say:

“It was good to see Jon [Moxley]. You could see when he entered the ring that he was him. That’s the guy we’ve been waiting to see for a few years. I’m pretty sure there’s going to be a lot of people calling, knocking on the door, and trying to get here. Who knows who is going to show up next.”

Spears was also asked why he was announced before the show unlike Moxley who was an impromptu surprise appearance, to which he replied:

“I don’t know. That’s above my pay grade. I wasn’t in those meetings. I was a last minute addition. I left [WWE] 90 days ago and this card was pen to paper, months and months ago. The card was pretty much booked. I don’t care where I would have been. It’s about being a part of history.”

Interestingly, Shawn notes that he, unlike Moxley, has not yet signed a full-time AEW contract. However, he did not rule out the possibility of that happening in the future:

“At this moment, there’s nothing in writing. When the opportunity came to [be at AEW Double or Nothing], I dove all over it. I didn’t ask any questions. I didn’t care. I knew this was groundbreaking and history making and I wanted to be a part of that.”
