Former WWE Women’s Champion On Age Female Wrestlers Should Retire

A former WWE Women’s Champion has talked about the double standards for wrestling retirements between male and female competitors.

Recently, many wrestling figures have been discussing the impact of an aging roster. Mickie James has chimed in, noting that women in wrestling are expected to retire way sooner than male talent.

Replying to Taya Valkarie’s tweet suggesting that age should be celebrated, James spoke about her experiences. Noting that she was expected to be winding down when she felt like she was warming up, James pointed out that WWE have had male champions who are decades older than she is.

Explaining that every WWE career should be celebrated, James tweeted:

“I agree 1000 percent. But in this industry once you hit 35 it’s perceived you should start wrapping it up and retire as a women. Even though your just hitting you stride. At 40 ‘retire already’ Even though the men are champs well into there 50s and glorified for it. Sad but true.

“I feel I need to say this as I would never want to feel as if I had offended a brother. I am in NO WAY discrediting the men in our industry! They have EVERY reason to be there & to be celebrated! I myself would jump at the opportunity to share the damn ring with them.

“I have nothing but love and respect for EVERYONE I’ve shared the ring, locker room, busses, & road with. Whether it’s 1st day or last day on the job you deserve that respect & I hope I always gave it. The cream ALWAYS rises & should be APPLAUDED! I was merely stating an obvious truth.”

A 5 time WWE Women’s Champion and 1 time Diva’s Champion, James is one of the most decorated ladies in the WWE locker room today. Most recently competing in the 2021 women’s Royal Rumble match, James has proven her versatility, thriving in numerous different WWE eras.

On Raw last night, an interesting intergender match was set for Fastlane 2021 this Sunday.
