Goldberg has addressed potentially “passing the torch” to a top current WWE star with his retirement match.
In late 2024 Goldberg announced during an appearance on ESPN that he would be competing in one final retirement match in WWE at some point in 2025.
As of now there has been no official updates on when the bout is set to take place, nor who the former two-time Universal Champion will be facing off with.
The name most speculated to potentially face Goldberg in his final match is current WWE World Heavyweight Champion GUNTHER, with the two men sharing a tense exchange at WWE Bad Blood in October.
During an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, Goldberg addressed potentially facing GUNTHER in his final match, being very open to the idea given The Ring General’s actions the last time they met.
Goldberg said:
“He’s the new generation. I’m the old generation. It’s kind of like a passing of the torch in a way. I wouldn’t turn that one down by any stretch of the imagination.
“You don’t ever open your mouth in front of my wife and my son negatively about me.”
Goldberg would also discuss his last WWE match against Roman Reigns in February 2022 and how Vince McMahon had previously promised him another proper retirement match that never came to fruition, saying:
“Vince had promised me another match because not too many people know this, but I took the Roman match with like a month prior notice, and I had Covid. That’s not the way to go out.
“I always, in the bottom of my heart, wanted to go out and present myself in a little bit more positively than I was able to. I mean, Paul and I spoke and we came to an agreement that in 2025 I’d have my retirement match.”
We will provide further updates on WWE’s plans for Goldberg’s retirement match as more information becomes available.
