Current Champion Discusses Potentially Headlining WWE WrestleMania 40 WWE

A current champion has discussed potentially headlining WWE WrestleMania 40.

GUNTHER has reigned as WWE Intercontinental Champion since defeating Ricochet on the June 10, 2022 edition of SmackDown.

For the past 430+ days, “The Ring General” has put on classic matches against the likes of Sheamus, Rey Mysterio and Drew McIntyre.

After taking an even further step in his progression by setting the all-time record for the most time in a single Royal Rumble match, many fans have anticipated that it is only a matter of time before the IC Champ was in the main event scene.

In a new interview with Steve Fall of, GUNTHER was asked about headlining WrestleMania 40 as the Intercontinental Champion. He answered:

“Who knows? If I get the chance to be in the Royal Rumble as the Intercontinental Champion, maybe?”

“Yeah, I think going into it, I would be a favorite, so that would lead to WrestleMania, so the chance is there.”

On possibly breaking the Honky Tonk Man’s record as the longest reigning Intercontinental Champion of all time, the Imperium leader said:

“Yeah, that’s crazy, right? It’s nothing that I ever, like, wrote on my wall and be like, you gotta achieve that. It’s just more or less a side effect of it, but that’s still the future. I still gotta go through Saturday first.”

GUNTHER will defend the Intercontinental Championship against Chad Gable on the August 21 edition of WWE Raw.
