WWE Intercontinental Champion GUNTHER has addressed the controversy surrounding his title defence against Sheamus on SmackDown.
Towards the end of the October 7 title bout, Sheamus had GUNTHER trapped in his Cloverleaf submission hold. The Imperium leader appeared to tap the mat twice before grabbing the rope to break the hold.
While some argued that GUNTHER had conceded the match via submission, the official didn’t call the bout, as GUNTHER only hit the mat twice before reaching the ropes.
GUNTHER ultimately retained his gold after striking Sheamus with a shillelagh behind the ref’s back.
On Twitter, GUNTHER shared a WWE post questioning whether or not the Ring General tapped, replying:
“Obviously, no!”
As previously noted, Sheamus had called the finish a ‘screwjob’ during his first reactions to the finish. The Irish star has now followed up with:
“The Austrian Tap Machine Tapped the Tap that was heard around the world… #screwjob #hetappedout #guntapper”
In response, GUNTHER tweeted:
“Not the sharpest knife in the drawer….”
Ready for Extreme Rules, Sheamus then replied:
“You’ll see how sharp my knife is in a few hours Tappy McTapface #ExtremeRules”
“Tap After Tap After Tap After Tap After Tap After Tap After Tap After Tap After Tap After Tap After Tap After Tap After Tap After Tap After Tap After Tap After Tap After Tap After Tap After Tap After Tap After Tap After Tap After Tap After Tap After Tap After Tap After Tap.”
At Extreme Rules, Sheamus, Ridge Holland & Butch will battle GUNTHER, Giovanni Vinci and Ludwig Kaiser in a good old fashioned Donnybrook match.
