There was a heel turn after the AEW World Championship match at tonight’s October 18 AEW WrestleDream pay-per-view in St Louis, Missouri.
The penultimate match of the night saw Samoa Joe challenge Hangman Adam Page for the AEW World Championship.
It was Page who emerged victorious to retain his title, but there was a big development after the match.
There appeared to be a moment of respect between Page and Joe post-match, with Joe’s partners in The Opps, Katsuyori Shibata and Powerhouse Hobbs, joining them in the ring as well.
However, after raising Page’s hand in victory, Joe turned on him and laid him out, with Joe, Shibata and Hobbs launching a three-on-one attack.
The beatdown concluded with Joe landing a Muscle Buster to Page on the AEW World Championship belt.
This now positions The Opps as heels in their upcoming AEW World Trios Championship defense against The Hurt Syndicate.
The Hurt Syndicate earned the title shot earlier tonight by defeating The Demand in a #1 contenders’ tornado match.
That match is confirmed to be taking place on Wednesday’s October 22 episode of AEW Dynamite.
Also set for Dynamite is Kazuchika Okada defending the AEW Unified Championship against Bandido, and the brackets for the tournament to crown the inaugural Women’s Tag Team Champions will be revealed.
