How D’Lo Brown Got Signed By WWE WWE

Former WWE Intercontinental Champion D’Lo Brown has revealed how he initially got signed by the company from a one-off appearance.

Brown has told the story of how a phone call to Jim Cornette, who he hadn’t spoken to in nine months, led to his WWE career.

In an interview with Rewind Recap Relive, he explained:

“I was down in Puerto Rico doing some tours for Carlos Colon and WWC, and I had come home for Christmas break, you get a couple days off, so I flew home and back then we didn’t have our cell phones, we still had Rolodexes, so I had phone numbers in my Rolodex. Kids, it’s a rotating cylinder with paper in it that you write phone numbers on, Google it.

“So I go through the Rolodex and I go to call people I’ve been out of touch with, and one of the names is Cornette. I haven’t talked to him in nine months. So I call him up and I go, ‘Hey Jim,’ he goes, ‘D’Lo! Where the hell have you been?’ I go, ‘I’ve been down in Puerto Rico,’ he goes, ‘Oh that makes sense I’ve been looking for ya! Hold on I’ll call you back,’ and he hangs up on me. I look at my girlfriend and go, ‘Jimmy just hung up on me, I don’t know what’s going on.’

“Five minutes later he calls me back, goes, ‘Can you be in New York on Saturday?’ – and it’s like Wednesday. I go, ‘Yeah I can be there,’ he goes ‘WWF travel will call you, do you have a suit?’ I go, ‘Yes I do!’ He goes, ‘Alright I’ll see you on Saturday,’ he hangs up. I look at my girlfriend and go, ‘I need to go get a suit,’ because I didn’t have one.

“Travel called me, and they arranged it, and that was for the first Shotgun Saturday Night, and I had no clue why I was going there other than Jimmy told me to be there, and when I got there it was discussed about being in the background of the Nation because if you remember the old Nation, there was Clarence Mason and a bunch of other guys in suits, those were Clarence Mason’s fraternity brothers, none of them were wrestlers. So you’ve got this group getting heat on the superstars, and the superstars can’t get anything back because none of these guys are trained performers, so they needed a bump guy to come in so the babyfaces could get even with the Nation without getting their hands on Ron Simmons or Savio or Crush at the time. “That’s how it started, I was the guy who came in to get beat up one night. I took the Pearl River Plunge on the hood of a Lincoln, and Vince McMahon loved the bump, and is like, ‘We need to do something else’.

“As I was walking back to go back to the locker room, Vince stopped me, because you have to walk past where he is sitting, and he goes, ‘Watch this’, and it’s the bump, he waited to go to commercial break, and we sit and watch my bump together. He goes, ‘That was awesome,’ and right there I impressed the dude who was the decision maker.

“From that one off bump I kept getting brought back, and brought back until finally I was put under contract.”

In the same interview, Brown agreed with the idea that the Nation of Domination would be babyfaces in today’s wrestling world, saying:

“Without a doubt, the Nation would be babyfaces right now because people would get behind the things we were doing.

“The first thought of the Nation was it was a black militant group that hated white people but that was the furthest thing from the truth, we were equal opportunity haters. We were equal opportunity haters. We hated white people, black people, green people. It didn’t matter. If you got in the way of what the Nation wanted, we came after you.

“That is a trait that people tend to dig nowadays, where you go to get what you want by any means necessary, and if you’re not gonna give it to us, we’re gonna take it.”
