HUGE Change to SummerSlam Title Match

HUGE Change to SummerSlam Title Match

Following surgery for a ruptured breast implant on June 19th, Charlotte Flair made a triumphant return on this weeks episode of SmackDown Live to kick off her latest journey to reclaim her crown as WWE’s ‘Queen’.

Flair emerged during the opening segment of the show to save her best friend — and number one contender for the SmackDown Live Women’s Championship — Becky Lynch, from a blindsided beatdown at the hands of Carmella. The SmackDown Women’s Champion had baited Lynch in with some uncharacteristic words of thanks and praise regarding WWE women’s “Evolution”, only to strike Lynch from behind after using the entrance music of recently-fired James Ellsworth as a distraction.

Carmella hit a patented super kick, and was setting up for a DDT on a steel chair when Charlotte’s music hit. Charlotte rushed the ring to deliver a Suplex on Carmella — especially impressive in a pair of heels — and affectionately embraced Lynch as she recovered from the attack.

This was Charlotte’s first appearance since the Money in the Bank Ladder match on June 17th.

Carmella proceeded to dig herself into a hole backstage as she complained about Charlotte’s actions to GM Paige, with an especially ill-timed poke at Paige’s sorely retired status. As a result, Paige gave Carmella and Charlotte this week’s main event with an opportunity for Charlotte to interject herself into the SmackDown Live Women’s Championship match between Carmella and Lynch at SummerSlam if she was victorious.

Lucky for Flair, the momentum of her return faired better than her last crack at Carmella at Backlash in May. After some failed count out attempts at the hands of Carmella, and some serious back and forth near-falls, Charlotte eventually gained a victory via a Figure-8 Leg Lock.

Charlotte’s comeback has officially made the SmackDown Live Women’s Championship match at SummerSlam on August 19th a triple threat bout.

While Charlotte remains one of the most celebrated talents in WWE‘s Women’s Division, many fans who have advocated for Becky Lynch’s time to shine are left with the feeling that the ‘Irish Lass Kicker’ may be getting overshadowed once again.
