HUGE IWGP Intercontinental Championship Match Set For G1 Supercard

The lineup for G1 Supercard is now coming into focus. With the New Japan Cup in the books, the top matches appear to be set. However, this now includes the IWGP Intercontinental Championship match as Tetsuya Naito is set to defend his title against Kota Ibushi.

Following their match in the New Japan Cup, Naito and Ibushi continued to clash. Despite both men being eliminated, their focus turned to Naito’s Intercontinental Championship. Ibushi, who has never held the title, challenged Naito to a match for the belt. They agreed to a match and a date during their post-match interview at the New Japan Cup Finals.

Ibushi defeated Naito in the first round of the New Japan Cup. This clearly put him in line to challenge for the IWGP Intercontinental Championship, and now the match will likely be added to a stacked G1 Supercard lineup. Ibushi noted in his interview that he has never competed at Madison Square Garden before, and that it seems like the perfect place for a big match.

Naito won the IWGP Intercontinental Championship for the third time when he defeated Chris Jericho at Wrestle Kingdom 13. Despite it being a title that he hates, Naito admitted that he seems linked to the title as it keeps finding its way back to him. He would later proclaim that he wanted to be the first man to hold the IWGP Intercontinental Championship and the IWGP Heavyweight Championship simultaneously.
