WWE Extreme Rules 2018 will take place on Sunday, July 15 and following last night’s edition of SmackDown Live, another championship match has been added to the card.
Last week on SmackDown Live, Jeff Hardy was scheduled to defend his WWE United States Championship against Shinsuke Nakamura, following the latter’s post-match beat down a couple of weeks prior.
However, this match had to be cancelled as the ‘King of Strong Style’ was bitten by a police dog at the venue of a WWE Live Event the night before and wasn’t cleared to compete.
Hardy instead held an ‘Open Challenge’, which was answered by Eric Young of SAnitY. ‘The Charismatic Enigma’ retained when the bout ended in a no-contest after a brawl between the Usos and SAnitY erupted.
Last night, Hardy successfully retained in a second ‘Open Challenge’ against The Miz. It was later confirmed that ‘The King of Strong Style’ will get his shot at WWE Extreme Rules.
Jeff won the WWE United States Championship in early May when he defeated Jinder Mahal on the Superstar Shake-up edition of Raw, before being drafted to the blue brand the following night.
He has retained the gold four times as it stands, defeating Mahal in his contractual rematch at Greatest Royal Rumble, Randy Orton at Backlash, and in the aforementioned bouts against Eric Young and The Miz.
Nakamura has just come off the back of a WWE Championship feud with AJ Styles, which culminated at Money in the Bank when Styles defeated the Japanese star in a Last Man Standing Match.
Here is the current card for WWE Extreme Rules 2018:
- Jeff Hardy (c) vs. Shinsuke Nakamura – WWE United States Championship
