It has been over a decade since we have seen Hulk Hogan step into a wrestling ring, his last televised match taking place against Sting at TNA Bound For Glory in 2011.
Despite this, the Hulkster has often spoking about his desire for one last match, never ruling out the possibility of him stepping into the ring one final time.
Well, if Hogan is to be believed, that could have potentially happened at this year’s WrestleMania against a rather surprising opponent.
Speaking to Ariel Helwani on the MMA Hour, Hogan claimed that none other than Shane McMahon called him with a pitch for a match at this year’s WrestleMania event.
Hogan went on to explain how the timing wasn’t right for him, but he’s not ruling out a future retirement match.
“Shane McMahon called me. He goes, ‘You got one more in you, old man?’ I said, ‘Take it easy with the old man stuff, brother.’ I said, ‘What do you want to do?’ He goes, ‘All you got to do is stand in the middle of the ring and I’ll come to you.’ I said, ‘Well, right now my back needs a little more work but that’s something we can talk about next year.’
“I’ve always wanted to have a retirement match but right now, I’m not moving around the way I should be so I’m going to keep working, keep training and keeping doing rehab and see where I’m at about six months from now. All I’ve found out in the wrestling business, brother, is that you never say never.”
Hogan continued on, saying that next year marks the 40th anniversary of the birth of Hulkamania, and hinted he’d be open to one more match to celebrate the occasion.
“January 23, 1984, I beat the [Iron] Sheik. That’s coming up [next] year, that’s the 40th Anniversary. I know Mattel’s got a full-court press on products and action figures and stuff. It’s the 40th Anniversary, anything’s possible, I just never dreamed I would even think about being 70 years old and getting in the type of shape in would take to walk the walk again but like I said, anything’s possible.”
Shane McMahon did end up returning to the ring at WrestleMania 39 for in impromptu match against The Miz which ended with McMahon tearing his quad.
