Years before AJ Styles had made a name for himself as one of the best wrestlers in the world, he wrestled a squash match for WWE. In 2002, he took on Hurricane Helms on an episode of Jakked.
A clip from this match was put on Twitter at which point Helms responded with a story. Helms revealed that he tried to get Styles hired but instead he got heat backstage for letting him do too much. Here is the tweet:
I did everything in my power to get AJ hired at a time when WWE didn’t know about him. Even got heat for letting an “unknown” do too much. I knew he was good even back then. And now he’s one of the best in the world. Incredible journey. https://t.co/hIk2KkMLcL

Helms and Styles both worked for WCW during the company’s dying days. Styles was one of the WCW wrestlers whose contract was not picked up when WWE purchased the company.
Instead, AJ Styles became one of the top wrestlers of the independent scene, making a name for himself in promotions like Ring of Honor and TNA before going on to work for New Japan Pro Wrestling and WWE.
