The ongoing controversy of WWE Crown Jewel will not go away.
It was revealed late last week that despite reports of the show potentially being moved to another locale, WWE was holding strong and still bring their next pay-per-view to Saudi Arabia.
Aside from the pre-existing issues of WWE running an event in Saudi Arabia (human rights violations, discrimination against women, etc), running a show in the country became a serious issue with the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside the Saudi consulate in Turkey, which was apparently ordered by the Saudi regime.
This terrible tragedy has had major ramifications in the worlds of both business and politics, with WWE a big time player in both.
While several other companies immediately distanced themselves from the country, the world’s largest wrestling promotion made the decision to not cut ties with the Saudis.
WWE’s bold choice also caused a stir because CEO Vince McMahon’s wife, Linda, is a member of United States President Donald Trump’s cabinet. TMZ Sports questioned Linda over the decision to go ahead with the event in Saudi Arabia, which she made clear had nothing to do with her:
“If you want to talk WWE, you’re talking to the wrong McMahon… I don’t run it and I’m not responsible for it, you gotta talk to Vince.”
To add a little levity after the denial of any Crown Jewel knowledge, Linda was jokingly asked if she ever speaks to the President, himself a WWE Hall of Famer, about WWE. She noted that when she last spoke to him it was about more pressing issues.
Do you think Linda McMahon really had no say in Crown Jewel staying in Saudi Arabia? Let us know in the comments, on Twitter, or on Discord.
