The inspiration for a currently ongoing storyline in All Elite Wrestling (AEW) has been revealed in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
Dave Meltzer wrote that he knows Cody Rhodes has been studying tapes of the Larry Zbysko/Bruno Sammartino storyline, and the similarities between this and Rhodes’ current storyline with QT Marshall are evident.
Meltzer wrote:
I know that Rhodes has been studying the progression of the 1980 Bruno Sammartino vs. Larry Zbyszko feud, and this is an attempt to follow at least some of that psychology and direction. The original Bruno vs. Zbyszko match came after months of Zbyszko slowly turning, and I guess you could say the same the past few weeks of QT. The understatement of the year is that they will be hard pressed to match the promos, as arguably the greatest feud promos in history were the ones for that program. But the idea is that you have best friends but one is in the shadow of their more famous friend, wants to get out of it, forces a confrontation (Bret Hart and Owen Hart’s program in 1993-94, which also had months of build-up, was along similar lines) and then it explodes.
Rhodes and Marshall are set for an “exhibition match” on the next AEW Dynamite with Nightmare Family head coach Arn Anderson as the special referee.
In terms of backstage roles, Marshall has been Rhodes’ assitant in AEW. Marshall does a lot of the behind-the-scenes stuff no-one sees and Tony Khan has called him the hardest worker in the business.
