Io Shirai has been NXT Women’s Champion since NXT TakeOver: In Your House last June. She has been very successful and has run through many of the challengers put in front of her.
Now, Shirai has opened up to Sports Illustrated about one of her greatest rivals. Shirai was asked about Japanese superstar Mayu Iwatani and Shirai said she wants to defend her title against Iwatani at an NXT TakeOver. Here is the quote:
“Yes, Mayu Iwatani is certainly one of my greatest rivals. If we ever have the opportunity to compete for the title at an NXT TakeOver, I am confident we would put on a great show. It is definitely a dream match for me.”
Mayu Iwatani has been working for companies like Stardom and Ring of Honor in recent years. She has been called one of the best wrestlers in the world, regardless of gender.
Io Shirai also recently named new NXT UK star Meiko Satomura as a dream opponent.
