IWGP Heavyweight Championship Changes Hands At Wrestle Kingdom 13

The IWGP Heavyweight Championship has changed hands at Wrestle Kingdom 13. Hiroshi Tanahashi has defeated Kenny Omega to win the title for the record eighth time.

The title change completes the night of title changes as every single title match resulted in the championship changing hands. Kenny Omega fell to Hiroshi Tanahashi following a long, hard-fought battle. Tanahashi was able to avoid the One-Winged Angel and successfully hit the High Fly Flow for the victory.

Tanahashi won the G1 Climax and the right to challenge the IWGP Heavyweight Champion at Wrestle Kingdom 13. He then defended his title shot successfully against Kazuchika Okada and Jay White. Omega won the IWGP Heavyweight Championship from Kazuchika Okada at Dominion 6.9. Omega then defended the title against Tomohiro Ishii, Cody, and Kota Ibushi before losing the title to Tanahashi.

Omega’s position with New Japan Pro Wrestling is in question as All Elite Wrestling has announced its formation. Whether he will remain with New Japan or move on remains to be seen but will be a big story.
