Jake Hager On When Possible Jon Jones Bout Could Happen

AEW’s Jake Hager has discussed the possibility of an MMA bout against Jon Jones, revealing when the potential bout could happen.

In November, Jones announced on Twitter that he’d be fighting AEW’s Jake Hager at the December 9 Fury Grappling event. Jones deleted the post after Hager stated that no contracts had been signed, and Hager later noted that things went quiet regarding a fight.

Speaking on AEW Unrestricted, Hager has revealed that a contest against Jones is still very much a possibility. The AEW star noted that Jones had jumped the gun with the announcement, but as far as he knew, a wrestling and submission bout is in the works.

Noting that the bout could happen in January, Hager said:

“He reached out to Josh Rafferty again and wanted to do a wrestling and submission match in New Jersey on December 9th. As an Oklahoma country boy that’s wrestled since he was four years old, it hits me right in my wheelhouse. Yea, you’re the greatest of all time, but you’re not going to take me down. I was very excited about it. It seemed like it was going to go down. He jumped the gun early on tweeting it out before we had any details.

“As far as I know, it’s still in the works, maybe January 9th now. We’ll see. But I think it’s very cool that he wanted to do that with me. I think it’s a testament to AEW, what AEW is doing, how current and how popular we are right now, and how on the rise we are, and it’s a testament to myself. Toot toot.”

January 9 would notably be one day after the AEW Battle of the Belts TNT special. An AEW Women’s Championship match has already been announced for the event.

Hager’s last MMA fight took place at Bellator 250 on October 29, 2020, where he defeated Brandon Calton. He last wrestled for AEW at Full Gear in November.
