One of the biggest title changes of the year took place in Japan today. In the main event of Pro Wrestling NOAH’s Destination event, Keiji Mutoh defeated Go Shiozaki to win the GHC Heavyweight Championship.
Mutoh (better known to global audiences as The Great Muta) was able to defeat Shiozaki with a hurricanrana. Mutoh is currently 58 years old.
He also now becomes only the third man in history to win the IWGP Heavyweight Championship from New Japan Pro Wrestling, the Triple Crown Heavyweight Championship from All Japan Pro Wrestling, and the GHC Heavyweight Championship from Pro Wrestling NOAH. The only other people to accomplish the feat are Yoshihiro Takiyama and Kensuke Sasaki.
Go Shiozaki’s reign as GHC Heavyweight Champion lasted 405 days dating back to January 4, 2020. He had defended the title in a match against Takeshi Seguira in December 2020 which was rated five stars by Dave Meltzer.
