Jim Cornette On CM Punk AEW Debut: ‘It Was Perfect’

Jim Cornette On CM Punk AEW Debut: ‘It Was Perfect’

The controversial Jim Cornette has had his say on the AEW debut of CM Punk that took place this past Friday on Rampage.

Speaking on his Drive Thru podcast, Cornette began his review of the segment by saying:

“Well, it wasn’t the way I would have done it… it was actually a lot better. It was perfect.”

He explained that, since everyone pretty much knew Punk was going to turn up, his idea would be to surprise people with how Punk debuted, in the sense of having him unveiled in a big angle or some kind of shenanigans.

He then admitted that Punk would have known Chicago better than him and knew that he didn’t have to do anything like that for it to be a big deal.

Cornette also went on to add that AEW has had so many surprises in big angles recently that this actually stood out as being different because it was just Punk walking out and doing a promo without any attacks or anything else happening.

He also praised the Chicago fans as reacting better to Punk than WWE fans did to John Cena’s return at Money in the Bank this past July.

He also pointed out how Punk’s ‘promo’ was so good because it was actually less of a promo and more of just a conversation with the fans.

The only thing he hinted at being a slight weakness was how Darby Allin and Sting just so happened to be up in the rafters, but then said, “We’ll go with the moment”.

Cornette also said he wasn’t opposed to Allin being Punk’s first opponent. Cornette has actually had a lot of praise for Allin’s work in the ring, although he doesn’t quite understand why he does all the insane stunts.

He also said the close of Punk’s promo, when he mentioned there were free ice cream bars for everyone in the arena, was perfect too.

The final thing Jim Cornette said about the segment was how AEW is so hot right now that his advice is simple: “Just don’t f**k it up”.
