There are few names in wrestling that have had matches across several decades, let alone five decades, and Ric Flair is one of those few.
On Episode 184 of the Grilling JR podcast, explained that it wasn’t all plain sailing for the Nature Boy, particularly during his run in WWE in the early 2000s.
Having returned to WWE in 2001 as the storyline co-owner of the company, it wouldn’t be long before Flair returned to active competition, forming Evolution with Triple H, Randy Orton and Batista.
It was Flair’s match against Rob Van Dam at No Mercy in 2002 that JR would focus upon, saying:
“I don’t know that we had a good handle on how to book Ric. I think that what we should have done in hindsight, which is always pretty viable, is Ric should have been booked as an attraction. Seldom used, but when he was used, used in a positive manner.”
The likes of The Undertaker, Goldberg, Brock Lesnar have more recently worked reduced schedules for WWE. While Undertaker retired in 2020, Brock Lesnar is still active on a part-time basis. Goldberg hasn’t wrestled since Elimination Chamber in February, and recently provided an update on his WWE status.
