On Wednesday, one of the more high profile wrestlers released by WWE was Rusev. However, based on the fact that the two parties were locked in ongoing contract negotiations that didn’t seem to be going anywhere, the fact he was fired shouldn’t be too surprising.
Also released was Rusev’s former ally Aiden English. Many have speculated that another promotion could try recapture the popularity of the Rusev Day act and bring both men into the company once normality resumes.
While he might not have addressed Aiden English, AEW commentator Jim Ross commented on the news of the releases on his podcast and said that Rusev would be his “priority”:
“Rusev would be my priority. That’s who I’d want to go after first because I can see him having some major pay-per-view main event matches with a variety of top talents in our company AEW. Anyone would be smart to hire him.”
Ross is right, Rusev has the potential to be either a serious main event heel or a top babyface for any promotion that wants him. AEW and others, if they are in a position to do so, could look to snap Rusev up fast.
This is certainly a good indication that AEW is interested in Rusev. Just a few months ago, Ross said on his podcast that he was a fan of Brodie Lee, Lance Archer and Jeff Cobb and all three have since gone on to wrestle for the promotion.
