NXT Champion Joe Hendry has opened up on a cameo appearance he made on WWE Raw back in 2014 as Rusev and Lana’s lawyer.
Before he was NXT Champion, before he answered Randy Orton’s open challenge at WrestleMania 41, Joe Hendry made his first WWE television appearance on Raw in 2014.
Hendry appeared as an extra, serving as Rusev and Lana’s lawyer during a segment on the show, and Hendry has now opened up on getting the role.
Speaking to Lana (CJ Perry) on TMZ’s Inside The Ring, he said:
“For that particular opportunity, my gut instinct told me that when we were trying people out, I saw everyone with their pieces of paper, and I was like ‘if I don’t use the piece of paper and have this whole thing memorised in the five minutes that they gave us to do it, if I can do that and not even look at the piece of the paper’, I felt that was gonna be the thing that might tip the decision.
“What happened was we had a whole bunch of people that were going to read it out, everyone had their piece of paper, they asked me to go first. I just threw away the piece of paper and went into the promo, and they immediately went ‘ok he’ll do it’, and they didn’t even get the rest of the people to read through it, so my instinct was correct there.
“I’ve never really revealed this, but I’ve had a few moments in my career where the pressure really got to me, and the pressure did really get to me that night because when I was trying it out in the back I messed up a couple of times and I was like wow, this is gonna be tough.
“I actually remember (Lana and Rusev) being there backstage, and even just you guys being there and encouraging me, that really did help, so thank you for that, and I think we were able to go out and have a really fun segment.”

Hendry would also detail a comedic moment from the segment that came from him being ‘focused on the details’ of the character.
He said:
“What people might not know, and this might be a little bit of comedy for everybody, is I was so focused on the little details. I’m this lawyer for Rusev and Lana, I wouldn’t know how to get out of the ring correctly, so I’ll get out the ring the wrong way.
“So we all had to spill out the ring, I put my foot back as Miro’s putting his foot forward, and I fell out the ring, and you can only see it for like one second, and you can hear Michael Cole laugh about me falling, and nobody’s picked up on it, so you can go back and check it out.”

Hendry won the NXT Championship on last week’s episode of NXT, winning the vacant title in a Ladder match.
