WRESTLETALK.COM INTERVIEW
Joe Hendry on the collaboration with PUBG Mobile:
“I’m someone that’s hugely familiar with the PUBG brand and fanbase. I’ve been playing the game since I think 2017 – I was the third wrestler on Twitch and that was the game that we launched with, so I’ve got a lot of amazing memories with the franchise, and now to be in collaboration with PUBG Mobile, which is one of the most played games in the world, it’s a huge collaboration for me, it’s huge for TNA Wrestling, and it was such fun to get involved with the brand and the franchise. When we made the trailer and I got to put on the helmet and the shirt and the tie, and we filmed it in an underground nuclear bunker. It was just an amazing career full-circle moment for me, so I’m absolutely thrilled and delighted to have this partnership with PUBG Mobile.
“It’s a huge honor. I remember, obviously as players will know, when you win the game, it’s called a Chicken Dinner, and one of my favorite memories is I remember me and my brother were playing a team game and I got killed right away – which is always what happens – and he went on to actually win the game, and he beat all the other teams, which was an awesome moment. So I do have so many great memories, so to now actually have my likeness in the game, it’s a huge moment for me in my life.”
On how the partnership came about:
“The PUBG Mobile team posted something to do with my entrance, and just being cheeky as I like to do, I tweeted it and said, ‘Hey listen, if you want the real thing in your video game, all you’ve gotta do is say his name’, and then obviously PUBG Mobile did reach out, we got the conversation going and I was delighted that we were able to move forward with it. It’s been a fun experience, the collaboration’s been great so far. I think because we’ve got such a great respect for the franchise, and I think the PUBG Mobile team realized that, and that’s why we’ve been given some freedom with what we filmed for the trailer and creatively how we approach it, so that’s been super fun. But I just can’t wait to see what it’ll be like to actually see my likeness in the game. I’m very excited to see how this is gonna turn out.”
Does it feel surreal being part of a game you’ve played so much?
“It’s just crazy how life works out sometimes. In my adult life, I can’t really think of more games that I’ve spent more time with than PUBG. Say if I go in my Steam library, if I look at ‘games played’, I’ve spent more time with PUBG than just about anything else. So for that to be the franchise that we’re getting involved with, it’s just such a huge honor to be involved with PUBG Mobile. And the fact that it’s the mobile version of the game means it’s so accessible to my fanbase as well, so it means people who have never tried the game before, if they are a fan of Joe Hendry and they wanna see what it’s like to play with my likeness on the battlefield, then people can go ahead and do that at the click of a button on their mobile. I was absolutely blown away – me and my brother were blown away – with the experience and how user-friendly it was when we played, like to use the controls on a mobile. I remember when I approached the mobile version I thought to myself, ‘I guess I’m gonna need a controller’, but I found the controls were extremely intuitive and again, me and my team were blown away with how intuitive the controls were. So if you haven’t played the game before, download it. It’s free to play as well, so it’s a great time to get your hands on PUBG Mobile.”
How good are you at PUBG Mobile?
“Actually, and I’m being completely truthful when I say this, the first game I played of PUBG mobile, I got a Chicken Dinner, so I actually won my first game. And my brother did too. So we were feeling pretty good about it. Like I say, it’s a very fun experience. I have to be honest, the development team were horrified to find out that I am a ‘camper’, I think is the term, which is basically that I will just hide in the fields of wheat until everyone else has eliminated everyone else, and I’ll try and get a lucky shot at the end. Because look, I’m the TNA World Champion, I don’t have all the time in the world to be one of the top PUBG players, but I do like to think I’m intellectually up there, so I try and use my strategy and intelligence to overcome my lack of ability in the game. But now I’ve got no excuse, it’s on my mobile, I’ve gotta get practicing.”
The rise in popularity of Joe Hendry:
“The last year has been incredible. My song was released on April 29 last year, and since then, things have been nuts. There’s so many amazing fan interactions. I just did a signing at Chicago’s C2E2 and there were about 10 Joe Hendrys that showed up. There’s gonna be Joe Hendrys running around in PUBG Mobile just like there are in real-life now. There are people cosplaying as me, and there were about 10 of us, and we all got to sing the song together so I put that up on my social media and that’s kind of gone a little bit viral as well. I’m actually very excited – I’ve seen the real-life stuff, I’m excited to see what viral moments we get from PUBG Mobile as well.”
Fans wanting him to appear on WWE Raw in Glasgow:
“I was in Glasgow that day, I did a concert that night, me and Mark Henry did a concert, and we got 1,000 people there. So there were some people in Glasgow who got to see me that night, but I enjoy all the fun of that side of things. It was great to see the fans that came out and saw us at the aftershow. I understand that people wanted to see me (on Raw), but like I say, we had the concert after and I still got to have that moment in Glasgow with 1,000 fans who were going nuts. And also to share the stage with Mark Henry as well, we did a version of my song, ‘I Believe In Mark Henry’, which was a lot of fun, so we did a little bit of a tour around the UK, so I’ve got fond memories of that week.”
The responsibilities of being TNA World Champion:
“It’s hugely rewarding. There was a period of time where a lot of colleagues were getting signed and I was kind of wondering if and when things would happen for me. But I was enjoying the process of what I was doing so much and I was so focused on getting the best reactions that I could from the fans, that all the opportunities came as soon as I shifted my focus into just giving the audience the best entertainment that I possibly could. But to now be here as TNA World Champion, it’s an amazing feeling and a responsibility that I enjoy, and my focus is just trying to deliver record business for TNA. I want people to look back and say, ‘Joe Hendry as World Champion, The Hardys as Tag Champs, that meant big business for TNA’. So I’m excited for the business that the entire locker room is doing for the company and everyone backstage and the fans as well. TNA’s a hot product right now and, yeah, onwards and upwards.”
Working such a busy schedule:
“Look, a busy schedule is a compliment. The busier you are, the more in-demand that you are, is a compliment to your popularity and your skills. So I very much enjoy that responsibility. The schedule is a part of the job, and every show that I do, every appearance that I do, every piece of media that I do, I just try to get better every time.”
How his WWE Royal Rumble appearance came about:
“Someone said my name. That’s how it works.”
Will Joe Hendry work on more partnerships going forward?
“For me, the important thing is that we haven’t done a partnership before of any kind really. Other than a couple of things here and there, I even did something with WrestleTalk back in the day, little things here and there, little collaborations. But this is the first major non-wrestling collaboration that I’ve had. So my focus is, PUBG Mobile has an extremely dedicated fanbase, so rather than thinking about the future and what other collaborations or whatever, our job here and our goal is to really focus on creating something really authentic for the fanbase and I think if you watch the trailer, you’ll see the amount of time and passion that we put into that. And so right now, the focus when it comes to video game collaborations, my sole focus right now is to deliver something exciting for the PUBG Mobile fanbase. That’s my only consideration is to really deliver something great. Because I think these collaborations are great when everybody puts in effort, and I know that we’re putting in a lot of effort, PUBG Mobile’s putting in a lot of effort, this is not just phoned in. We’ve gone to work here to put in some really cool stuff. The custom song, the trailers, the custom outfit, the minigame, there’s been a lot of work and development that has gone into this, so I think for me, I don’t wanna speak on behalf of everyone else involved, but for me, we’re super focused on this right now. And who knows? The door is always open between me and PUBG Mobile.”
Where you can find Joe Hendry:
“First of all, you’ve got to download PUBG Mobile to your device, check it out and get some practice on the game, because you’re gonna need it. Because you’re gonna want to get all those Joe Hendry items in the video game. The in-game event is going to run from April 18 to May 17, so that’s the time you’ve got to get all these goodies here. So get practicing, that’s the first thing. The other thing is if you want to follow me, it’s @JoeHendry on Instagram, Twitter, and on TikTok it’s @JoeHendry1 because someone took JoeHendry. That’s where you can get me.”
Joe Hendry appeared at WWE WrestleMania 41 on April 20 in a match against Randy Orton – the interview took place prior to that.
