John Cena Apologises To China After Calling Taiwan A Country

Former WWE Champion John Cena has issued an apology to China after calling Taiwan a country in a recent interview.

During a media tour for the new Fast and Furious 9 film, Cena called Taiwan a country while speaking to TVBS, which seemingly upset a portion of Chinese fans.

Cena posted a video onto the Sina Weibo platform clarifying his comments. While he didn’t mention Taiwan, Cena was clearly very apologetic for his mistake:

“Hi China, I’m John Cena. I’m in the middle of Fast & Furious 9 promotions. I’m doing a lot of interviews. I made a mistake in one of my interviews. Everyone was asking me if I could use Chinese… the staff [of the movie] gave me a lot of information, so there was a lot of interviews and information.”

Despite clearly being very apologetic, some fans on the Weibo platform were seemingly still upset with Cena, with one user saying that they wouldn’t accept Cena’s apology until he said in Chinese that Taiwan is part of China, per WrestlingInc.

“Please say in Chinese that Taiwan is part of China. Otherwise, we won’t accept it”, wrote one user. “Then you should say Taiwan is China’s!” wrote another.

This controversy started after John Cena said that Taiwan was the “first country” to watch Fast & Furious 9 during an interview with TVBS. The film was released in Hong Kong on May 19, but won’t be available in the United States until next month.

John Cena is expected to return to WWE later this summer, with the company reportedly hoping the multi-time WWE Champion will be back for the July 16 episode of Friday Night SmackDown.
