Charlotte Flair has shared her honest thoughts on John Cena being the one to break Ric Flair’s recognised WWE world title reign record.
Charlotte made it no secret that she was chasing her father’s record, with Ric Flair listed as having 16 world championship reigns recognised by WWE.
This record was ultimately broken by John Cena, who won his 17th world title in the form of the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 41.
Speaking with The Takedown on SI, Charlotte noted that she didn’t see Cena breaking her dad’s record as a sad moment.
She explained:
“Records are meant to be broken. I don’t wanna speak for my dad, but I think in this case I can, John was the guy to do it.
“I think he couldn’t be more proud of John. Even me seeing John Cena and what he means to the industry and what he means to me as a performer, I don’t think it was sad.
“The record stood the test of time for a very long time and it was finally broken.”
Prior to WrestleMania 41, Charlotte stated that if Cena was to win a 17th world title at the April 19-20 event, she’d be the one to break Cena’s new record.
Addressing her current mindset, she told The Takedown:
“The first part of my career, I really didn’t think about it. Now that I’m so close, I don’t think for me it’s about tying or breaking John, but… could I have the opportunity to tie or break my father.
“The competition was with him, not necessarily tied to Cena.”
