As per the Hollywood Reporter, John Cena and Kathy Bates have both signed on for ‘The Independent’, an upcoming political thriller.
Jodie Turner-Smith, star of Queen & Slim (2019), and Brian Cox, notable for his work in the Succession TV series, were previously announced for the feature.
‘The Independent’ is set in the final weeks of the “most consequential presidential election in history” and follows an idealistic young journalist (Turner-Smith), who teams up with her idol (Cox) to uncover a conspiracy that places the fate of the election, and the country, in their hands.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Bates will play the first female presidential candidate, while Cena will play an independent presidential candidate. Cena will reportedly be joint-lead with Turner-Smith.
Cena has starred in a number of notable releases this year, including The Suicide Squad, and Vacation Friends, which is Hulu’s most-viewed original film ever.
He is also set to feature in Argylle, which began production last month.
