John Cena has recalled first doing his signature “You Can’t See Me” taunt on WWE television, revealing the idea came about following a dare from his brother.
Across two decades in WWE, John Cena has been synonymous with his signature ‘You Can’t See Me’ gesture, which has gone on to not only become a staple of his WWE appearances, but also birth countless jokes about Cena’s apparent invisibility online.
Speaking on the Joe Rogan Experience, Cena recalled the origins of ‘You Can’t See Me’, telling Rogan it was born from a dare from his younger brother.
Cena said:
“It was a dare. Happy f**king accident. My brother dared me to do it. When I was in the middle of the rapping wormhole, I’m a platinum rapper I made my own album. In making the album we would bring home all the tracks and my little brother was our test audience, and he would do this dance where he would like shake his head and keep his hand in front of him. He’s like you won’t do that on TV. And again, I was on the programs that no one was watching, so it’s like no one’s watching anyway, yeah f**k you I will do it on TV.
“And I did it on some meaningless Saturday show and there was a little bit of noise. So I took it with me on the road for the next week and I did it on the live events weren’t televised, there’s a little bit of noise. Okay, this is my thing now. And now it’s a thing.
“But also I was in a place where I was able to tell my brother okay, I can waste two seconds on an inside joke between you and I. That’s the dare, it’s not going to ruin the match. If you’re the only person watching Velocity that night, you’ll be like ‘Inside joke, got it.’ It’s like shouting out your gaming group, like seven people get the joke. But this is one of those things where it kind of fit and it stuck.”
