John Cena wrestled his first and only match of 2022 on the December 30 episode of SmackDown.
Cena teamed with Kevin Owens in the show’s main event, defeating the Bloodline duo of Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn in tag team action.
Cena’s appearance on the show had been announced weeks prior to the match, building anticipation for his appearance.
While Cena did not appear in any other segments on the show, that doesn’t mean that those segments don’t exist.
Per Fightful Select (subscription required), WWE had at least planned to film something between Cena and United States Champion Austin Theory when Cena was at the December 30 SmackDown.
Theory was set to main event a WWE live event in Toronto that night, taking on Seth Rollins in a Steel Cage match, which he was then pulled from in order to travel to Tampa to film a segment with Cena.
The report doesn’t note whether the segment was to be a digital, for future use, for 2K, or what or when it would be used, but that the segment was indeed filmed.
The report also discusses the potential planned match between Cena and Logan Paul at WrestleMania.
