The date for a match between John Cena and CM Punk has been confirmed as Cena’s WWE retirement tour continues.
When Cena announced 2025 would be his final year in the ring, one of the matches at the top of everyone’s lists was one with CM Punk.
Cena and Punk of course have a notable history going back over 10 years ago, including their memorable match at WWE Money in the Bank 2011 in Punk’s hometown of Chicago.
On tonight’s post-MITB June 9 episode of WWE Raw, Cena opened the show and was interrupted by Punk.
Punk said that on behalf of all the fans, he has to stop John Cena from ruining wrestling, and that means taking the WWE Championship from the 17-time world champion.
Punk ultimately challenged Cena to a match on tonight’s Raw.
Cena said he accepted Punk’s challenge to a match, but not for tonight’s WWE Raw – instead, Cena said that if Punk wants a WWE Title shot, he’ll have to follow Cena to Saudi Arabia for Night of Champions on June 28.
That was seemingly playing off Punk’s history of anti-Saudi Arabia comments, so the storyline is that Cena has put Punk in the position where if he wants a title shot and he wants to save the fans so badly, he’ll have to go to Saudi to do it.
Michael Cole noted on commentary that Punk said off mic “you’re on” to accept Cena’s challenge, although it has yet to be made fully ‘official’, so we’ll keep you posted if/when that happens.
UPDATE: The match was made official with a graphic later during Raw.
The segment ended with Mr Money in the Bank Seth Rollins, flanked by Paul Heyman, Bronson Reed and Bron Breakker, coming out on the stage and holding up his MITB briefcase, reminding Cena and Punk that he can now cash that in any time he wants.
