With John Cena confirmed to be appearing at WWE Backlash, Charlotte Flair has commented on what fans can potentially expect.

WWE Backlash takes place on May 9, with John Cena recently revealing that he will have some “history-making news” to share at the upcoming Premium Live Event.

While the nature of the news is yet to be revealed, Charlotte Flair recently shared her thoughts on John Cena and his upcoming appearance during an interview with ESPN SportsCenter, saying:

“Well, John Cena! Tampa is his backyard. He’s the GOAT. I feel like any time he’s in the ring, he’s either making history or breaking records.

“And, even though he’s retired, any time we have the opportunity to have Cena back in the ring, it’s going to be special, because he is special. He’s one of the GOATs.”

History-Making News?

John Cena is no stranger to history-making moments in WWE, with his final run as an in-ring star coming to an end last year and seeing the veteran star break a world championship record at WrestleMania 42 in April 2025.

When it comes to the “history-making news”, it’s likely going to be linked to Club WWE, a new initiative described as a “gold membership experience for fans” when it was announced on April 14.

With Cena still very much involved in WWE, having hosted WrestleMania 42 last month, the retired star delivered the voiceover for the Club WWE announcement, indicating that he’s likely the spokesperson for the initiative.

Backlash won’t be the last time that fans will see Cena, however, with a recent report noting that his new WWE deal includes a number of future appearances.

While more details of Cena’s role at Backlash remain to be seen, the prominence with which Club WWE has been promoted on television does suggest that this may be the direction his appearance will take.

There’s always, obviously, the chance that Cena could repeat the theme of interacting with WWE stars in the ring, having done so with Danhausen, Kit Wilson and The Miz at WrestleMania 42.
