‘That Only Works For So Long’: John Cena Discusses WWE Character Changes WWE

John Cena has revealed the method behind his character development in WWE over his multi-decade career that comes to an end this year.

The current Undisputed WWE Champion, John Cena’s career comes to an end with his final match scheduled to take place in December.

During a recent appearance on The Breakfast Club, Cena opened up about his character development in a WWE career that started with his signing back in 2001.

Speaking about the hard work he has put into character development over almost twenty-five years, Cena said:

“Well, I’ve worked very hard to try and use my storytelling through WWE.

“If, again, I’ve had a 25-year arc as the same character, so if you essentially go out and play the same stuff all the time, people get tired.

“So you have to introduce your character. My character started as an underdog and a very brash, smack-talking character who got their ass kicked all the time.

“Then I began to lean into this sort of Superman persona, and that only works for so long.”

Cena would go on to explore his connection with the WWE audience and how that has worked for him, stating:

“And then the audience — I really feel like I have a strong connection with the audience because I put myself out there.

“I’ll embrace losing, I’ll embrace embarrassment, I’ll embrace failure, and I think those are all important things — not only as life skills, but to connect with the viewing audience so they can watch for a quarter of a century and still be like, ‘That’s my guy.'”

The Undisputed WWE Champion has recently stated that the fans will ‘dictate the direction‘ of the final months of his retirement tour.

With fan engagement clearly a hot topic for the retiring star, Cena has also note that there have been ‘pivots‘ in WWE creative and his storyline.
