John Cena’s True Thoughts On Short WWE Intercontinental Championship Reign Revealed

John Cena’s True Thoughts On Short WWE Intercontinental Championship Reign Revealed WWE

John Cena became a WWE Grand Slam Champion this year and has shared his true thoughts on his Intercontinental Championship reign.

In his retirement year, John Cena captured the WWE Championship, breaking a long-standing record for world championship wins.

While that championship reign would come to an end at SummerSlam, Cena’s title record wouldn’t stop there.

In November, Cena would become WWE Intercontinental Champion for the first time in his career, defeating Dominik Mysterio.

With Cena now a WWE Grand Slam Champion, the soon-to-be-retired star opened up about what the win meant to him in a recent appearance on Insight with Chris Van Vliet.

Cena would reflect on getting to face Dominik Mysterio before noting that his win gave the Intercontinental Championship ‘a boost’, saying:

“It means a lot to fans, I think. It certainly works well on a business card, but I ain’t wrestling anywhere else so I don’t need the ‘Hey, this is my resume, maybe I can get a match?’

“What is special about that is I was able to work with Dom Mysterio in three of my last four matches. Gosh, that was really special. Honestly, the most special thing about winning it was being able to lose it how I did, that was really cool.

Sharing his thoughts on winning a secondary title so late in his retirement run, Cena continued:

“I got to experiment with the US Title and create an open challenge, before that I got to experiment with the US Title and turn it into a spinner belt. Twice I was given what we in the company view as a secondary achievement, and was relentless in making it a primary objective.
The guy on his way out… You don’t touch that stuff. You’re a champion, you’re of this pedigree, you don’t mess around with secondary objectives.

“In Boston, I made it mean something, and it did, it’s a nice win. The person who had it before me certainly gave value to it, but then him beating me again for it and now having it gives him even more value.

“Any time you can take something that isn’t the most coveted prize, isn’t the leather and gold that all of us chase, and you can get everybody to look at that, just for a split moment, that’s the significance to me of ‘what did it mean to win the Intercontinental Championship?’ It means for a hot second, we gave it a boost.

“I think it still has that boost, and Dom has been doing a great job giving it that boost, but it was a nice little extra kick in the butt, and a good use of three appearances.”
