A change made to John Cena’s pipe-bomb promo on WWE SmackDown during the segment has now been revealed.
Cena got the wrestling world talking on the June 20 SmackDown episode, recreating CM Punk’s iconic 2011 “pipe-bomb” promo after slamming his WWE Night of Champions opponent through a table.
Cena’s promo featured numerous callbacks, including fourth wall breaks, where he named several former WWE stars.
Per WrestleVotes in the Backstage Pass Q&A, the referees checking on CM Punk mid-promo wasn’t originally planned for the WWE segment.
Indicating that the referee received this direction during the WWE segment, WrestleVotes said:
“I heard on Saturday that if you go back and rewatch the WWE segment, you’ll see after about five minutes of him laying, a referee slides into the ring to check on him.
“I had heard they did that to make it seem less cringey that he was just laying there. That wasn’t supposed to be the case, but I guess somebody in the back said, ‘He can’t just lay there for 10 minutes. Send somebody out.'”
CM Punk will challenge for John Cena’s WWE Championship at Night of Champions on Saturday, June 28.
Cena recently noted that there have been “tons of pivots” to creative plans during his WWE farewell tour.
